Fitting the coil
- Best time is at the end of your period.
- Take any prescribed antibiotic as advised
- You may take some pain killer 60-90 minutes before fitting the coil.
Normal symptoms after fitting a coil
- Light lower abdominal cramps in the first 1-2 days.
- Heavier longer periods (but still regular).
- Some pain during the periods (dysmenorrhea).
Schedule of Follow-up
- After the first following period.
- You should be able to feel the threads of the loop high in the vagina, especially after your period.
- Visit your doctor every year.
- Change the coil every 5 years.
Symptoms to report to your doctor
- Irregular or missed periods.
- Fever or severe abdominal pains.
- Not being able to feel the threads of the coil.
- Heavy or offensive vaginal discharge.
- Diagnosed diabetes mellitus.
- Chronic use of pain killers.
- Diagnosed pelvic inflammatory disease.
If you fall pregnant on the loop, please consult your doctor urgently to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.
